For some reason, they moved the highpoint marker from the top down to the start of the summi trail at Clingmans Dome
When it comes to highpoints, none receive more visitors than Clingmans Dome, the highpoint of Tennessee. Standing at 6644 feet, the mountain, which sits on the Tennessee and North Carolina border, is the third highest point east of the Mississippi River behind only Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Craig in North Carolina.
Clingmans Dome sits in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it is just one of many places worthy of a visit while spending time in the park. For those looking to avoid a long hike, a trip during the warmer months of the year (April-December) allows one to have the opportunity to drive near the top of the mountain and take the half-mile trail to the summit. If you go during the winter months, the Clingmans Dome road is closed, making the journey a bit longer.
If you think the warm weather drive to the half-mile trail is just an easy, jump out of your car and take a leisurely stroll type thing, think again. The trail, while paved, is quite steep, but it is still doable. If you are brining younger children with you, it will take a bit of time. Be patient, take advantage of the sitting areas along the way, and all of you will make it to the top.
Once you are at the top of Clingmans Dome, the odds are that you will not be able to see as much as you might think. Between pollution from nearby areas and the clouds in the vicinity, the view might not be as spectacular as you would think. Also, prepare for cooler temperatures and some precipitation when you head up. Even if it is in the summer, long sleeve or a jacket will probably be a good idea.
If you are going to just go to Clingmans Dome, you are going to miss out on some of the spectacular scenery and activities in the area. The National Park Service has all types of guided hikes and activities that will prove to be fun to kids and adults. There are many different trails to follow on other mountains and passes. Many different bodies of water abound for summer fun. Some of the pulloff areas offer spectacular views, especially around sunrise and sunset. If you are in a hurry and taking on a challenge, then going to the highpoint and down makes sense, but if you have a day or a couple of days, you will get suckered into the beauty of the area.

Clingman’s Dome is steep, but the view from the parking lot is almost as good as the view at the top.
That is true. The drive up is fantastic as well. Too bad it is usually very cloudy at the top.
Sadly so…
